This is Captain Norton of the USS Pathfinder transmitting from the Gamma 1 Octantis system.
We arrived here, in our assigned target system, 5 Earth days ago. However, shortly after
departing from hyperspace, we were ambushed by a rogue starship. Upon entering the star
system our scanners alerted us to the presence of another vessel. It must have been following
us for quite some time, carefully staying out of the range of our radar. They were
quick to jam our radar while approaching us, firing their ion beam cannon at our ship.
Our shields successfully deflected their attack, and we got a few good hits on their hull.
It was at that moment that their ship was struck by a perfectly-timed meteoroid that tore through
their cabin, depressurizing their vessel. We couldn't believe our eyes!
Upon identifying the ship and scavenging it for useful materials we discovered that they
were humans. There were no survivors. We identified their ship to be a 23rd-century Earth vessel,
Destroyer-class, which had been hijacked by pirates at some point in within the past 20 Earth
years, as best as we can tell.
