served in the Sol System Space Force before being scuttled off Earth. It
was then acquired by a guild known as The Bowyers' And Fletchers'
Company shortly before the exodus, upgraded with equipment suitable for
flight into deep space, and launched with a crew of eight. Space
flight into deep space, and launched with a crew of twelve. Space
Specialist M. Stephens awoke from hibernation to find the rest of the
crew missing in action. The story begins here.

Acting captain's log, Archer-51, entry number two:
Coordinates, encoded C115B8AF-F900-4483-9AC9-5C4D3319C424.
Intergalactic time spec follows this log.
The Archer-51 is now mostly at nominal operating status. Position is
known and time is kept. The commissary machine is producing edible food
and comfort systems are fully operational. Copilot robot # J3N67 is
functional and able to operate navigational systems well enough to
permit me to tend to the rest of the ship.
The obvious missing piece is the rest of the Archer's crew. At full
capacity, the ship's crew is twelve. As stated in the previous log, I am
the only person aboard the ship.
Further investigation suggests that the other eleven crew members never
boarded the Archer. Their quarters are undisturbed, with no personal
effects or other signs of habitation. Their hibernation pods appear to
have been open continuously since launch; that my pod functioned
properly under these circumstances is remarkable and a testament to the
quality of modern shipbuilding. Unfortunately, that quality does not
extend to the ship's archives, which appear to be incomplete from
approximately eight hours before launch until my awakening. Landside
backups are, obviously, not accessible from space. Spaceside backups
began only after I enabled them. Thus, there is a hole in the logs, and
in my understanding of how I came to be in this situation.
Fortunately, this situation is, for the most part, comfortable, if a bit
lonely. The commissary's food is actually somewhat tasty; a pleasant
surprise and a further example of the quality of Archer's build. My own
personal effects were loaded into my quarters, so I have access to my
library and entertainment. I have also been assembling some of the
optional equipment on the Archer for educational purposes. My rating at
the Academy was Missile Technician; with only light weaponry and no
enemy to engage, the Archer has no need for a missile tech, but the
skills I learned are useful for all manner of technology assembly.
Per aspera ad astra.
End log.

ARCHER-51 (Archer Class, Hull Number 50A2FABFDD276F573FF97ACE8B11C5F4)
ALMANAC
Subject: The Bowyers' And Fletchers' Company
Organization Type: Guild
Line Of Trade: Shipping
Former Headquarters: London, Earth 0, Sol System
Current Coordinates: 954BB079-7629-4D62-B441-E62D8299A24D
Formation: 2142 (o.s.)
Nature Of Formation: Merger
Predecessors:
- Bowyer Industries
- The Fletcher Institute
Fleet:
- 77 Archer Class
- 75 in service
- Archer-27 destroyed 2547 (o.s.)
- Archer-42 mothballed
Personnel: over 9,000
Security Classification: Alpha
Narrative:
The Bowyers' And Fletchers' Company (B&FC) is a shipping guild formerly
based in London on Earth 0 in the Sol System. It was formed in 2142
(old style calendar; new style calendar:
9b424f64fcfc50a938c4862a309d82cc68da65b70618b5e4128b70294b1780b3f616490d
e8e2fe80a193eb2a8f17ecab1132cdaeb39af354d43bee9acc79da00) in a merger of
Bowyer Industries, a long-haul shipping company, and The Fletcher
Institute, a shipbuilding consultancy under contract to the Sol System
Space Force. The name Bowyers' And Fletchers' Company was taken as a nod
to the Livery Companies of London, the former system of trade guilds
which at one time featured a Bowyers' Company (the guild of longbow
builders) and a Fletchers' Company (the guild of arrow makers.) In a
further tribute to this system, when corporations were abolished in 2270
(o.s.), B&FC reorganized as a guild (new style.)
Despite Bowyer Industries' heritage as a long-haul trucker, the modern
B&FC engages solely in voyages of less than 500 million nautical miles.
While this restricts their business chiefly to the Sol System, this
allows B&FC to operate a more economical fleet of delivery vehicles.
B&FC prefers a small and nimble class of ship known to the Sol System
Space Force as the "Mosquito Class" and christened the "Archer Class" by
B&FC. The Company's knowledge of this particular class of ship is
extensive, as The Fletcher Institute designed it under contract to SSSF.
When SSSF moved on to larger ships capable of longer distances, B&FC
acquired 77 former Mosquitoes and refurbished them as Archers. Of the
original fleet of 77, only two Archers have ever been removed from
service. Archer-27 was destroyed in a collision in 2547 (o.s.) with
fifteen fatalities. Archer-42 has been mothballed due to persistent
engine issues.
B&FC handles cargo for the merchant class, the industrial class, and the
military. It has an on-time delivery record of 93.3% since records have
been kept, placing it among the top tier of intragalactic shipping
companies. However, the Federation fined B&FC over FDN 23,000,000,000 in
2550 (o.s.) for safety lapses in the wake of the Archer-27 accident.
Following an internal investigation, B&FC committed to oversight by the
government to ensure the safety of its ships and crew. Since the Exodus,
safety has greatly improved.
B&FC's motto is "Recta ad Scopum" (Latin: "Straight to the target") and
its roundel depicts a black bow crossed with two red arrows on a white
background with a black border.

Acting captain's log, Archer-51, entry number three:
Coordinates, encoded 79532BD8-3DED-4FF4-A922-E3B2737BA5D5.
Intergalactic time spec follows this log.
I have recovered the Archer-51's manifest from the archives. I have
instructed J3N67 to post it to QEC. Unfortunately, it provides little in
the way of context.
It is not unusual for the Space Force to contract with Bowyers &
Fletchers for shipping. What is somewhat unusual is for this flight to
have been crewed exclusively by SSSF personnel. Usually, B&FC supplies
most of the crew, with one or two SSSF specialists on board to look
after protocol. However, the manifest indicates this flight was to have
been commanded by Lt. Colonel Courtenay, whom I happen to know from my
time at the Academy - she taught a course on avionics - and further
crewed by a number of SSFF officers and enlisted specialists. If the
flight was to be strictly military in nature, why was it assigned to a
civilian craft with no civilian crew?
And not only is the rest of the crew missing, so is the cargo. I have
visited the cargo hold and found no Model Eight containers. Instead, I
have found only one B&FC Model Six container containing provisions, as
is standard on all flights. It appears to contain provisions for the
full crew of twelve. (So at least I shouldn't run out of food and health
products any time soon.)
Furthermore, while the Archer was directed for Ganymede, we are
currently far off course at 79532BD8-3DED-4FF4-A922-E3B2737BA5D5. I have
instructed J3N67 to get us back on course as soon as possible, but this
could take weeks given how large of a divergence we are on.
I am still not prepared to issue a mayday call. J3N67 and I have things
well under control - it is just a matter of determining our next course
of action. I will continue to update as these questions are answered.
Per aspera ad astra.
End log.
