# Against All Odds (Take a Look At Me Now) - The Postal Service
*(note: the Remastered version)*
- the "horn" synth at the beggining - mourning
- vocals are filtered to sound like crappy speaker - distance
- the guitar-bass vs snare empty groove + the entrance of the "real" vocal production is a heavy hit
- what is the name for this kind of percussion where different hits kind of trip over each other?
- there is a good passage through different elements in the texture
- once it is introduced, I think the drum beat remains for the whole time, but a lot of stuff kind of moves through or in & out
singer's voice is good for this kind of song - holds the notes well, but the voice is very exposed, not especially powerful. expresses vulnerability and ( not spite, but like, sub-spite? )

<h1>Eventually — Tame Impala</h1>
<ul>
<li>sidechaining!</li>
<li>laid back “parlor” feeling to the beginning of the verse with the shaky synth chords</li>
<li>and then the doomy bass synth interrupts that — the undercurrent of feeling breaks in and becomes a torrent</li>
<li>lyrics and production align — expansion on “eventually” on the chorus</li>
<li>good instrumental reflection section in the middle?</li>
<li>the “break-in” is different in the second verse, because that ground has already been tread, it doesnt have to be as dramatic the second time, and it fits better with the lyrics</li>
<li>string <i>do ti do ti</i> motif on last prechorus, ending in harp flourish — increases the tension in the leadup</li>
<li>the string motif is continued and built upon in the outro section, sounds like it always belonged there</li>
</ul>
<p>
very good sense of regret and rationalization mixed together in lyrics & music
</p>
<p>
maybe something Tame Impala does is once the lyrics have colored/given meaning to the musical materials he's using, he lets the music then speak for itself with those associations, hence the longish, mostly instrumental section at the end
</p>

<h1>Olympus — Sufjan Stevens, Angelo De Augustine</h1>
<ul>
<li>listened in Summer 2021, on vacation to Wisconsin</li>
<li>layered vocals on the chorus, with Sufjan-esque layers of arpeggios (guitar and piano) portrays wandering energy</li>
<li>for being so simple, the verse instrumentation feels very full (the vibe instrument has a rich, low spectrum)</li>
<li>the major changes in color/section throughout the song come from the different instruments used in these vague-feeling layers</li>
<li>single voice in verse changing to layered vocals in the chorus feels like an opening up, supported by the instrumental layers changing too</li>

<h1>One at a Time — Unknown Mortal Orchestra</h1>
<ul>
<li>funky guitar with snare</li>
<li>perfect 4th up vocal harmony</li>
<li>middle driving section changes groove / feel</li>
<li>there are horn section flourishes</li>
<li>tape distortion makes the sound feel “packed together”</li>
<li>especially packed in is the rhythm section (bass/drums)</li>
</ul>
<p>
the feeling is a combination of laid back and pressure which produces a feeling of vitality and groove. theory: the laid back comes from rhythmic precision, and the pressure comes from contrast (loud off-beats).
</p>
<p>
the song is pretty short! its verse verse chorus verse basically, gives the feeling it could have been longer, but maybe there was really nowhere else for the chorus to go a second time, so it encapsulates the idea well.

<li>the slack voice on “immune from” and then a sharp “t” on “engagement” sounds like irritation, nice touch</li>

<li>nice clocky bass octaves on this album</li>
<li>strings, to flute/xylophone, to just a little guitar gesture back into verse

<ul>
<li>microrhythmic</li>
<li>the soft & analog-sounding synths are nostalgic and understated</li>
<li>also the interrupting section with the shine synth and the breakbeats</li>
<li>fairly short song, with ABA structure, and the B is a long instrumental break essentially</li>
<li>good interplay between vocal melody and the synth soloing in the second A section</li>
</ul>
<p>
I like how quietly this song grooves very heavily<br/>
Its emotional but marches forward<br/>
Its simple texturally and the B section complements the A

<li>F#m . . . C#7 . . . E/D . . . C#sus . C#7 .</li>
<li>I think those are the verse chords… they are cool</li>
<li>The lower strings have some active picking patterns, and the higher strings are on the off-beat often</li>
<li>“movement in your brain sends you out into the rain”
<ul>
<li>that whole section at the end is really cool where it cycles on the two chords</li>
<li>same prechorus tension as before but prolonged</li>
<li>when it resolves this time the song ends, really nice!</li>

<p>
Resignation to pain in the verse, comfort in the chorus, these kind of play back and forth

The chorus without melody is really nice, not even a solo, just a period of rest

# Turnin' Me Up - BJ The Chicago Kid
- starts with drumbeat and "studio-conscious" vocals, + ad libs
- skeletal funky structure at vocal entry:
- sparse bass and rhythm guitar, background vocals
- second verse adds horns, piano flourish, flute, very garden/fruit
- ends with a long, mostly monochord groove section w/o "actual" lyrics where the vocal layering becomes pretty dense and then fades away, into various ad libs - including an unintelligible rap or something?
- feels like a song that is on a meta level somewhat about the love of music performance & production like Vulfpeck
has a romantic/sexy feeling to it that is addressed to a lover, but feels more up & out directionally, not meant to endear or seduce the addressee as much as joyfully express the subject's feelings
also, the instrumentation does not create a feeling of intimacy, but rather of collective music-making, again implying that this song is in some ways more about music making than about love, although the love theme is well-expressed

<ul>
<li>technique of taking a short vocal sample on a single note and looping it forwards & backwards to hold</li>
<li>beats are in triple, until chorus</li>
<li>distinct change in vocal timbre in chorus — brighter</li>
<li>basic texture will stay fairly consistent in a section, with a lot of figure over it (different instruments, “sound units”, “gestural complexes” (better word??))</li>
<li>section “do so se” in bass returns after first chorus — with more percussion & white noise but same base</li>
</ul>
<p>
when the strange noises kick in after the initial section, feels like a room that is off-balance?
</p>
<p>
the feeling is playful/mercurial — texture feels like it can transform often, even if in reality there is a base that carries you along most of the time.
there is also a sense of wistfulness/regret maybe
</p>
<p>
the use of acoustic guitar and “naturalistic” percussion grounds the use of synths and other digital production
