See, but these changes fundamentally alter how the document is read. I intended for the [1] and [2] to be footnotes, not text links; if I had wanted text links I would have put them in.

The issue here is that KaTeX seems to think I'm trying to put in LaTeX commands when I'm actually just trying to escape markdown, which seems like a failure on KaTeX's part and not mine.
