# 2022 April 11, Post-meeting notes
Adding these here, since it seems to be useful to write down ideas that
haven't made it to the meeting.
We currently have some issues motivating our paper: we need to identify
the core claim(s) regarding our paper. So far we are left with some
ideas from last week and a few keywords: costs, metrics, evaluation,
porting, portability. We're not sure these are what we want to cover.
Some questions related to porting, which might help drive the discussion
forward:
- How can we evaluate the costs?
* Is the evaluation specific to our project? or can it be applied to
any porting process?
- How do we measure costs? is time (measured in man-hours) the only
relevant metric?
* Where did the bulk of porting time go?
* Can porting time be optimized?
- How can we estimate porting costs beforehand?
* Can we do this without knowing the system?
* Can we do this without knowing the exact requirements?
- What is the plus-value of our port? which parts of our system did
we port more exactly, and what are the particularities of the
new environment versus the old one?
- Is porting challenging/difficult/costly (which one of these?!) due to
system complexity? or due to lack of comprehension of the system? or
due to both? or due to some other cause?
- What is the measure of our success? where did we succeed? where did we
fail?
* is our implementation 100% conformant to our design?
* is there anything lacking in our implementation?
* if yes, what would be the effort required to reach a full
implementation?
* is this effort just engineering? are we still lacking knowledge?
- How does this particular porting experience compare/relate to other
porting projects?
- Is the software we approached "portable"? according to the definition
of portability given in Ghandorh et al., 2020.
* What percentage of code had to be adapted to the new environment?
* What components had to be adapted? what components had to be
eliminated?
Some questions are worth answering more than others and some can be
answered more realistically than others. What's the best that we can do
here?
Are there any questions that we are missing?
