* Oxford spelling
Oxford spelling is a variant of British English spelling which has settled on
using the -ize suffix like American English. This removes ambiguity in a lot of
situations where it would be unclear whether to use the -ise or -ize suffix. For
instance, the word "optimize" (in Oxford spelling) would be "optimise" in
standard British English spelling. Oxford spelling does not affect words like
"analyse" since the suffix is -yse rather than -i(s|z)e.
The -ize suffix is better etymologically as it is closer to the Greek root -izo.
